Senden taking a breather

AUSTRALIAN Open champion John Senden returned to Brisbane last night looking for a few days’ rest before tackling the WGC World Cup in Barbados.

Senden, who shot a 74 yesterday to finish equal 14th at the MasterCard Masters, admitted a frenetic round of engagements after winning the Open had taken its toll.

“It’s been a great week, but I felt mentally tired and a bit deflated over the weekend,” he said.

“I have five days in Brisbane with

my family before flying out to Dallas next Friday. I’m there a couple of days because I have a few jobs to do around our house. Then I’m off to Barbados for the World Cup from December 4-10.”

Senden, who will represent Australia with Mark Hensby in the $US5 million event, will not see his wife Jackie or son Jacob, 2, until he returns to Australia in mid-December.

“Jackie will remain on her parents’ cattle property near Bourke to help in the drought,” he said. “It’s been difficult not seeing them, but we’ll be together well before Christmas.”

Kurt Barnes, who closed with a 70 for fifth place, is another player who will miss next week’s Australian PGA Championship at Coolum.

Barnes will attend the first stage of the Asian Tour qualifying school in Bangkok.
