Tiger teams up for Washington stop
TIGER Woods and the US PGA Tour have reached a long-term deal to stage a new Tour event in Washington starting this July, the PGA Tour announced today.
The previous PGA events in the US capital failed in large part because Woods almost never made an appearance.
Woods will announce details of the event here next week, including prize money total and host course, but his Tiger Woods Foundation will serve as the host organisation and major charity beneficiary.
“This is a wonderful opportunity to expand awareness and interest in the work we’re doing for millions of kids across the country,” Woods said.
“I’m grateful the PGA Tour selected us as partners and am very excited my Foundation will host another amazing event, this time in our nation’s capital. I’m delighted to think of all the young people this will help us reach.”
The new event will take the place of The International on the PGA calendar. That event folded after 21 years for lack of a sponsor.
Washington’s prior event folded after it lost a sponsor after being relegated to the late-season events that come after the Tour Championship on the new PGA schedule, events with little hope of attracting star golfers.
“After an extensive search, we are very excited about our partnership with the Tiger Woods Foundation,” PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem said.
