The 49-year-old German, whose last win came at the Volvo Masters in 2002, was attempting to become the oldest winner in the history of the Colonial Club. But along with American Jim Furyk, he lost out to Rory Sabbatini, who sealed victory on the first play-off hole. The trio had earlier tied on

14 under par after firing closing rounds of 67.Sabbatini’s winning stroke was a beautifully judged 15-foot birdie putt. But Langer then missed from eight feet to hand the South African his fourth career PGA title. It was also the first title for the Masters runner-up since capturing last year’s Nissan Open title at Riviera.
Bernhard Langer American Pat Perez finished alone in fourth place at 12 under, with American Tom Lehman and Nathan Green of Australia a shot further back at 11 under.Langer’s last win in the United States was his 1993 Masters triumph. But despite failing to end his American title drought the former Ryder Cup captain was pleased just to be in contention again.”I’m disappointed I didn’t win but at the same time I’m encouraged with my game,” he said.”It’s the best I’ve played for a while and that’s very encouraging. I wasn’t thinking not having won for a while.”I tried to focus on the next shot and just play as well as I can, and as hard as I can, and see where we stand at the end.”But Rory made a great putt to win. He was quite a bit further away than me - several feet - and hit it right in the middle of the hole.”Sabbatini was in no doubt his winning putt was going in but was still surprised Langer missed his chance to prolong the play-off.”About four feet to go, I knew there was pretty much no chance of that putt missing,” Sabbatini said. “When I looked up and saw that, it was a good feeling.”But I was actually a little shocked to see Bernhard’s slide by the right edge and there was a lot of relief there.”
