Wie struggles, withdraws from Ginn Tribute
Mt. Pleasant, SC - Michelle Wie struggled mightily Thursday in her first competitive round in four months and withdrew after 16 holes of the Ginn Tribute because of a nagging wrist injury.
Wie was 14-over par after just making bogey at RiverTowne’s par-four seventh when she withdrew from the newest tournament hosted by Annika Sorenstam. Her round included a quintuple-bogey and a triple-bogey.
The 17-year-old Hawaiian was playing this week on a sponsor’s exemption. She had been sidelined since February after suffering a left wrist injury while running.
‘It felt good
when I was practicing but, you know, I kind of like tweaked it in the middle of round a little bit,’ said Wie. ‘So just taking cautious measures, and I know what to work on. The only way to go from here is up, so I’m feeling pretty good about it.’
Wie also had an injury to her right wrist and was playing with it taped when she missed the cut at the PGA Tour’s Sony Open in January, her only other start in 2007.
She had bandages on both wrists Thursday.
Last week, Wie accepted a sponsor’s exemption to play in the PGA Tour’s John Deere Classic for the third year in a row.
